Tongue Channel.... Have shown my Tongue Channel to a few students, but was surprised to see this video of Doc Reinhardt explaining my tongue position to a student nearly half a century ago. Thank you Wayne Daniels for the link (below). As you can see in my video, my Tongue Channel contains the air in such a way that little is wasted. The Channel produces an oral cavity that is virtually the sam...

Trumpet Tip--Reduce Tongue Arching
Переглядів 2,3 тис.5 місяців тому
A little past New Year's Day, but here's how to reduce tongue arching.... Play multiple ascending octaves of the same short melody, keeping your tongue arch roughly the same in the current octave as you just did in the previous (lower) octave. Read that again.... When I taught privately, I observed most players arching their tongues way too much as they ascended, creating too much tension and a...

One week ago today I broke my femur just below the hip socket, while hiking at Calico Basin. Had a rod and some screws surgically installed the next day at UMC. Great surgeon and trauma team! So, I started carefully walking without crutches 4 days later. I now have a plethora of hardware in the ankle, knee and hip, all on the right side. Does anyone out there know the meaning of that right side...

Trumpet Tip... Vocal Lift Part 3... In this short video, I clearly show the shoulder position for the vocal lift used when playing extended passages above double A..... And no, it's not a falsetto. ouf!le superman de la trompette!les soudures de son instrument sont renforcees? bravo et respect !
Lynn, i love see you playing !! you are fantastic
This is one of MF’s gigs where he was just ON. Powerful, clean, and hitting his spots. The circular breathing lip trill at the end? F me…just sick.

I was in high school in the 70’s and played trumpet in the band. We played charts such as Gospel John, Awright Awright, Kenton’s McArthur Park, Manny Album’s blues composition for Big Band (tough piece). MF and the trumpet section were equal to rock stars. 🌟 Very inspiring.
HELLOW LYN, I’m your super Fã… you are unbelievable !!
Was he involved with Chase at their beginning?
This guy is too good lmao
Happy Birthday Sal. Lynn, that should make Sal’s birthday much more exciting.
Been a huge fan of yours since you’re Maynard Ferguson days. Was listening to an interview you did a while back and heard you say you were part of one of the groups or jazz band at Waubonsee community college in Sugar Grove, Illinois. Recently moved from Kentucky up to Sugar Grove, Illinois and live only five minutes down the road from that community college. Drive by it now and think of you and all the cool big bands of the past.
Sal who? I hope he is well.
Sal you are so fortunate to have Lynn play Happy Birthday for you. That is a great present.
That hurt my ears, but it was beautiful...
Good day to you Lynn! Believe we have talked before and wanted to say you show a lot of power in the upper register! What would be some tips you would recommend to me if I have a strong daily double g but the tone quality isn't good?
Fantastic!!
At the Top! My dad watched this performance a bunch on DVD and I always loved this version of MacArthur Park the most. Love it.
You can still hear the reverb tail during the bows. My favorite part.
Not high enough, not loud enough. 😀
Maravilloso.siempre me encantó como tocó maynard ,desde el primer día que lo escuché .hoy lo sigo escuchando.es una leyenda viva.
Absolutely amazing! What an incredible version of "Mary Did You Know" by a fantastic musician!
Hello teacher~ It's so cool. What mouthpiece did you play with?
Awesome!
Jerry Franks was a wonderful player and educator that focused on anchor points. You could even send molds of your teeth to him and hed recommend where the logical anchor point was and even recommended getting an anchor point established through a build up/bonding process. It no doubt works! Another approach coming from the mouthpiece side is the Wedge mouthpieces. Dr. Dave has multiple videos explaining in detail how his design works but i can tell you they do indeed work! I find if i rotate the mouthpiece clockwise it along with my natural anchor point of my teeth clicks into the sweet spot.
Well done. Beautiful!! Thank you!!
Amazing stories and thank-you to Lynn for telling it like it really was. I don't detect any ego involved here. And yeah back in 70s 80s those LA session players were mostly the best brass you find anywhere. A lot of talent naturally gravitated to that gig because the money was so much better than on-the-road where you made $200-300 / week.
It’s not just the huge sound that’s Maynard-like. It’s that operatic, flowing, power ballad thing MF had. Kudos!
Not high enough or loud enough. 😂
On warmups-James Morrison says he doesn’t do any kind of physical warmup-only mental. He suggests that other players try this. On buzzing, it’s always seemed pointless to me. It’s nothing like playing with the mp in the horn. What’s the point? If you want to do light playing with no stress on the chops to get rolling you can play some quiet notes at the bottom of the staff.
Legend trumpet player
This man has really helped my playing!!
Amazing Lynn.
Really sounds like you were struggling with torn flesh from your lip issues on that Pretty Woman bit….JEEEEZUS!!!!!😳
You and Eric are the only ones who come close to the MF sound.
George was hipper than hip, what a "cat!" I used to hang with him and took some casual lessons, more just hanging out at his crib. I was so lucky to also play next to him on occasion with the Bob Stone Big Band!
Maynard will certainly rehire you!!♥️♥️
Maynard always had a talent for finding the greatest young players in the world. His biggest talent was showing off their talents and abilities.
I saw Maynard F in 1973 or ‘74. I was 9 years old. I got an autograph from the trumpet player I couldn’t stop watching, I never forgot his name, ever. Looked it up today. Wow, so awesome! I guess it wasn’t a dream. (it was you)!
Tango on ... just like in life
At 1:00, is your tongue touching your bottom lip when you are playing? Thanks
Randy Purcell, the Geico Caveman trombonist.
was this ever released?
A little Lin Biviano flavor, too. Great boost to my well being. Keep on keeping on!
A thousand times better than Lin.
Not high enough😂
Lynn, your method may work for you, but at the end of the day, vitamins D & C aid in muscle repair the best with a meal, water and/or Gatorade. I’ve been using this method along with rest, since back in the 90’s when I was playing 5-7 days a week. I also incorporated light mouthpiece buzzing a few hours before gigs to diffuse the lactic acid that formed in my chops from the high note/energy demands the night before.
Buzzing might be great for you, but it was the one thing that ruined me as a trumpet player. So when I took up playing again after a break of 9 years, but not trumpet but rather trombone, I never buzzed a day. AirFlow exercises done mp to mf, only going as high or low as I could get a good sound. But no buzzing. Played professionally bass trombone for 30 years. Orchestral, brass ensembles, big band. Stopped playing publicly 2 years ago due to a sporadic old-age caused lip tremor. But since stopping playing publicly, spending time solidifying my paddle, double paddle and pedal ranges, I've never played better. And if I get that tremor, I ignore it and only do lyrical pieces I enjoy so as not to mentally screw myself up.
I’ll ask the obvious question… Does it apply if my range is say half of what yours is Lynn? On a good day, I could hit a high F…. When I am beat up, a high C is pushing it.
Lower the range of the arpeggios, but use the same spacing in between as I do. Try to work your way up fairly fast.....
Hi Lynn! There is a reason why you put the tonghe in the mouthpiece's cup before to start playing a note? Are you making room or what? Thanks for asking Mike
Doc Reinhardt called it controlled wetness. I don't play completely dry, but almost.....
That’s got a lot of Chase in it, right, besides the MF? Chops that never quit.
I couldn't do that on a good day.
Wonderful thanks 😊. Like the low register too, and the family pics.
Nice to HEAR those chops have come back together nicely :-)
